Compact Disc

The compact disk is the product of a combination of many specialized fields, including computer science, sound engineering and laser technology. Based on a digital recording technique in which sound is sampled thousands of times per second, laser-read compact disks offered consumers several advantages over the typical long-playing vinyl LP, which had been the standard for nearly a quarter century. CD's increased clarity of sound and had a longer playing time, and the portable, convenient format created a sales boom as consumers repurchased their favorite recordings in the new format.
