UPDATE:

Finally, Pune university's IPR chair has an occupant
Express News Service
Pune, July 27: THE prolonged wait for appointment of a reader to the Intellectual Property Right (IPR) Chair at the University of Pune (UoP) is finally over.

Director General of Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) Dr R A Mashelkar announced on Sunday the appointment of young researcher and IPR expert Vishal Kataria to the coveted post for a five-year term.

Kataria ? a rare combination of an active farmer as well as legal and IPR specialist trained in the UK and USA ? was selected by a three-member committee comprising Mashelkar, UoP Vice Chancellor Ashok Kolaskar and senior expert in traditional medical sciences Dr M S Valiyathan.

An alumnus of Shri Shivaji Preparatory Military School (SSPMS), Kataria is a law graduate from ILS Law College and has done his post-graduate studies at University of Bristol in UK. Besides, doing his LLM in IPR from the USA. He also owns 150-acres of land at Bhor in Pune district where he takes care of cashew plantations while nurturing his skills in IPR and patent laws.

Kataria's prime task would be to generate awareness about patent laws and IPR and provide guidance to researchers and students at the university for patent presentations, drafting of patent proposals et.al., Kolaskar said.

Talking to The Indian Express, he said, ''Creating awareness about Pune's IP in the industrial sector and helping varsity researchers in successful drafting and presentation for patenting will be top on my priority.''

For two years since the CSIR extended a grant of Rs 1 crore for setting up the IPR chair at UoP, the reader's post had remained vacant. This provided much scope for speculation which has now been put to rest.
